North Whidbey Christian High School was founded in 2006 through the efforts of several families who gave of their time and money, and who prayed for a Christ centered high school at the north end of Whidbey Island. Classes began September 7, 2006 in the facilities rented from the Oak Harbor Christian School, then a preschool through grade eight institution of learning (OHCS now offers classes up through grade six.)
Enrollment that first year was fourteen. Classes were offered at the ninth and tenth grade level. In the fall of 2007, eleventh grade classes were added and the following year in 2008, twelfth grade was added to round out our class offerings. In the Fall of 2015, 7th and 8th grade were added to North Whidbey Christian High School.
The mission of North Whidbey Christian High School is to assist parents in nurturing their children by cultivating a distinctive Christian worldview based on the infallible Word of God and equipping them to discern biblical truth and be Christ’s agents of renewal in the world. Our aim is to provide an exceptional education in a classical curriculum within the framework of historical Christianity, furnishing the student with the tools of education and the inspiration to be a lifelong learner. As such we seek admission of entire families and not merely students.
God’s character is revealed not only in his Word, but in every facet of creation. Therefore we teach that all knowledge is interrelated and can instruct us about God himself. Our primary goal will always be to provide a learning environment from a Christ centered worldview with subject matter experts with a passion for their subject area. Our philosophy is to teach the students not just facts or theories but the intellectual basis of those facts and theories, with the underlying authority of scripture as our guide. Students will learn to question, analyze, and defend their particular position from a Christ centered prospective. We seek to challenge children academically at all levels and teach them how to learn for themselves.
We believe that the Bible clearly instructs parents, not the Church or State, to “bring up children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Therefore we seek to teach and discipline in a manner consistent with scripture and a godly home environment. Further, we maintain that parents have the full and final authority over all aspects of their children’s education; and that any teacher or administrator takes only temporary authority from the parents during the school day. Our purpose is not to take the place of parents but to assist them in academic areas where they may not be equipped. As such, parents and faculty must maintain constant communication regarding the scope and breadth of classroom instruction.
Our Statement of Faith contains those doctrines which we consider primary. Primary doctrine and authority of scripture will be presupposed in all areas of instruction. Secondary or divisive doctrines will be presented and discussed but will be referred to the family for final authority.
In summary, education flourishes when parents, teachers, and administrators properly understand the nature of learning, of children, and of schools. In order for education to succeed it must proceed according to how God made the world, otherwise it will be inefficient at best, and destructive and immoral at worst.
